Rip Currents

A current of water that pulls you away from shore.

Rip currents can be a hazard on most of Florida’s coastal beaches

when winds are blowing in from the ocean to the beach (onshore).

If caught in a rip current: don’t panic, wave for help,

swim parallel to shore until you feel the pull of the rip lessen,

and then swim to shore.

People drown when they become exhausted from

fighting the rip current by trying to swim directly back to shore.

Remember always swim at a Lifeguard protected beach and ask the

Lifeguard about any hazards in the ocean.
